For over 50 years, the Endangered Species Act has served as a critical tool in protecting fish, wildlife and plants at risk of extinction. It has helped prevent the loss of iconic species and safeguarded the habitats they rely on.

We celebrate the success stories, like the recovery of the bald eagle, the island fox and the Kirtland’s warbler, that show what’s possible when conservation works.

But today, too many species remain stuck on the list, not because recovery is out of reach, but because outdated regulations and red tape slow the path forward. It is time to shift the focus from permanent listing to meaningful recovery.

Interior is committed to modernizing the Endangered Species Act to ensure it protects wildlife while promoting economic growth and regulatory clarity.

National Endangered Species Day is a reminder that the goal is not just to list species. It is to recover them. That is why we are working to modernize the Endangered Species Act and build a future where more species can thrive on their own, and fewer ever need to be listed in the first place.
